Why this deserves a direct answer. Regulation for minors online has moved quickly, and we would rather be upfront about where things stand than leave you guessing.
On age and UIID today: this help center does not currently state a minimum age for creating an Individual UIID, and we know that's a gap worth closing. Regulators across Europe increasingly expect platforms to have a clear, stated answer here rather than silence, and this is an area we are actively working through.
What the wider regulatory direction looks like. Guidance for platforms that minors can access recommends private-by-default accounts for anyone under 18, no unsolicited adds to groups, engagement-maximizing features like streaks and autoplay switched off by default, and age assurance that is effective without being invasive. Momentum is building toward a single, harmonized digital age of majority across the EU, alongside broader rules that would extend these protections to AI chatbots and companions as well as social networks.
What this means practically today:
If you're a parent, don't assume a UIID or an ATRIUM account for your child currently has age-specific protections switched on by default. Write to [email protected] before setting one up for a minor, and we'll walk you through what's available.
If you operate an ATRIUM network and any of your members could be minors, plan around private-by-default accounts, no unsolicited group-adds, disabled engagement-maximizing features, working parental-control hooks, and non-intrusive age assurance. Treat these as requirements you're building toward, not optional extras.
One design choice already works in your favor here. Because UIID separates a verified Core ID from anonymous everyday aliases, an age-assurance credential — confirming "verified as a minor" or "verified as an adult" without exposing a birthdate — fits naturally into the badge system already described elsewhere in this help center. We're looking at making this available directly rather than leaving each operator to solve age verification alone.
