Why you are asked: Identity creation branches by entity type, each with its own flow. Picking correctly at the start saves you a migration later.
Human Individual — a physical human being. This is the standard identity, and the only one eligible for short codes.
Organization — companies, non-profits and legal entities. Also the route to applying for Verifier status. Organization, business and company account types all behave the same way.
AI Agent — autonomous, LLM-driven entities acting under someone's authority.
Hardware Node — IoT devices and servers, linked via physical attestation.
Digital Service — headless software services and APIs, with no human sitting behind them.
Collective — DAOs and shared group identities.
The rule of thumb: Ask who or what is acting. A person is an Individual. A registered entity is an Organization. Anything that acts on its own is one of the machine types.
A common mistake: Registering a company under a personal identity. If invoices, staff or credentials are involved, it is an Organization.
