What they are: Badges are verifiable trust credentials inside the UIID ecosystem. You can earn or apply for them — a "KYC Verified" badge, for example, confirming that your identity has been officially verified.
What makes them different from a profile setting: A badge is not a label a single platform gave you and can take away. It sits on your own identity, so it travels with you across every Web4 application rather than staying locked inside one app.
Why that is useful in practice: Trust normally has to be rebuilt from zero every time you join a new service. A badge lets a verified reputation carry over instead of restarting.
What an application sees: An app can check the badges you hold — the badge type, its level, and when it was issued — and decide what access to give you, without running its own verification process.
